Design Residency
With a rich and diverse history of craft production, Egypt has established itself as a key player in the contemporary design market, serving as a benchmark for ethical collaborations between designers and artisans. Its complex and layered history provides endless inspiration, while a deep sensitivity toward all members of the production process has guided local designers in shaping a truly authentic contemporary Egyptian design aesthetic.

This residency program, hosted in the vibrant city of Cairo, collaborates closely with local designers, creative organizations, and cultural knowledge keepers. It provides residents with the tools to cultivate a deeper respect for cultural heritage, promote sustainable practices, and develop more inclusive and meaningful design solutions that honor the lived experiences and knowledge of the communities they engage with. Upon completion, residents leave the program equipped with valuable and distinct skills, enabling them to create a lasting impact in their own practices, fostering ethical and sustainable where they work, and whom they work.

Designer Engagement
When engaging with craft and artisanal practices, designers often unintentionally reinforce power dynamics that lead to a reduction in the knowledge and skills of craftspeople. Approaching craft practitioners as equal partners in the development and production process can ethically redefine the intersection of design and craft.

Craft Preservation
As global interest in traditional crafts wanes in favor of industrial production methods, thousands of artisans are finding it increasingly difficult to sustain their craft. The skills and knowledge associated with these crafts are at risk of disappearing, along with the communities that practitioners are a part of, the micro-industries that support the craft, and a vital aspect of cultural identity.

When engaging with cultural practices, design narratives often emerge that reflect the values, histories, and traditions of the communities involved. These narratives not only highlight the craftsmanship and skills embedded within cultural practices but also reveal the deeper connections between people, materials, and their environments.
